MANAMA: The government is planning major cuts under the restructured social welfare system.

Well-placed sources told the GDN last night that the plan is to exclude 12,953 retired Bahrainis from the monthly special pension allowance while only keeping them on regular packages.

Currently pensioners receive BD150 for those earning below BD700, BD125 for pensions between BD700 and BD1,500 and BD75 for those earning over BD1,500.

The government also wants to exclude 1,558 Bahrainis with disabilities from the disability support for being well paid or having light disabilities.

The current number of people with disabilities benefiting from the welfare is 11,144.
