MUSCAT: Road accidents have dropped by nearly 40 per cent in Oman over the first five months of the year, says a news report.
The Times of Oman report quoting data released by the National Center for Statistics and Information said the count of accidents from January to May 2018 was 1,014, down from 1,676 incidents recorded during the same period in 2017.
The Governorate of Muscat had the highest number of road accidents with a share of 30 per cent of the total, followed by the North Al Batinah at 14.7pc.
The Governorates of Al Dakhiliah and Dhofar, each accounted for 13.8pc of the total number of accidents.
By the end of May, 248 deaths and 1,186 injuries had been caused by road accidents, while the same period in 2017 saw 249 deaths, and 2,359 injuries.
Data also showed that 143 Omanis died in accidents during the period under review, of whom 128 were males and 15 were females.
There were 105 fatalities among expatriates, 97 of the victims being male and the rest female.
