10-year-old saves people from suffocating during Mumbai building fire

Mumbai, India: The presence of mind shown by a 10-year-old girl saved the lives of people during the fire that broke out in Mumbai's Crystal Tower residential building on Wednesday morning.

The girl, Zen Gunratan Sadavarte, put her knowledge to use to save people from suffocating during the evacuation. She used clothes and water to help people in breathing refined air during the excessive smoke.

Speaking to ANI she said, "When the fire starts it generates a lot of smoke which has carbon and oxygen. I gathered my strength seeing people in panic. I remained calm and got some clothes and made small handkerchief out of them and added water into it. By adding water it became like a purifier. I convinced people to breathe through it to save them from inhaling carbon so that they do not suffocate and become sick".

The fire in the residential building erupted on Wednesday morning and 20 fire engines were rushed to the spot to douse the same. A crane was also deployed to rescue trapped people. Four people lost their lives and 16 others were injured in the fire.
