BAHRAIN’S Yahiaaldien Khalifa missed out on a berth in the final of the men’ 4,000 metres individual pursuit yesterday at the 18th Asian Games.
Khalifa, who was making his debut, finished 13th overall among 14 competitors as he completed the qualifying round in five minutes 03.289 seconds with an average speed of 47.479kph.
Sanghoon Park of South Korea won the gold in 4:19.672 and Ryo Chikatani of Japan the silver while Artyom Zakharov of Kazakhstan clinched bronze.
Khalifa will be back in action today in the men’s Omnium competition, again his debut in this event.
The event, starting at 5am, Bahrain time, is set to feature four stages - the Scratch Race, Tempo Race, Elimination Race and Points Race.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Abdulla Janahi maintained his position in the middle of the pack in the Laser Standard sailing.
Improved
Janahi had a solid start yesterday with a ninth-place finish in race 10 before he improved it to seventh overall in the next race. Following his performance in race 11, which was the penultimate event, Janahi stays in eighth place. He has 74 net points heading into tomorrow’s final race.
Jeemin Ha of South Korea leads the field with a 17.8 net score.
Meanwhile, Bahraini riders Shaikh Hasan bin Rashid Al Khalifa and Sayed Adnan Alalawi will be competing in the first round of the final in the jumping individual class.
Shaikh Hasan, riding AW Vivika, and Alalawi, on Baluu, are among 40 participants.
The first round of the final is scheduled for 4am with the medal round set for an 11am start.
Meanwhile, Bahrain handball team members continued their preparations yesterday for their historic first-ever appearance in a gold medal game - against defending champions Qatar tomorrow, starting 2pm.
