Bahrain are one step from securing berth in the Asian U17 Basketball Championship next year after defeating hosts UAE 67-55 at the 6th GCC Basketball U16 Championship at Shabab Ahli Dubai Club in Dubai last night.

Bahrain won the first quarter 15-6 but UAE bounced back to take the second quarter 19-13. Bahrain took the third quarter 26-13 but conceded the final quarter 17-13.

Bahrain are now in second place with five points after two wins against Oman and UAE and one defeat against Saudi Arabia, who clinched the championship title after defeating Oman 77-35 earlier last night.

Bahrain will play their last game on the closing day of the championship today against Qatar at 4pm (Bahrain time). A win will keep them in second place and also give them a berth in the Asian Championship U17 next year along with Saudi Arabia. Qatar are currently at the bottom of the standings with three defeats against Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman.

Bahrain’s best scorers were Ali Zainal (14 points), Ammar Yousif (10), Omran Abdulla (10), Ali Mahmood (9) and Mohammed Ibrahim (9).
