I MIGHT be an ageing woman, but my love for James Bond burns as strongly now as ever. That is despite the fact that Ian Fleming’s iconic British spy changes everytime a new actor takes on the role.
Sean Connery’s James Bond was suave, George Lazenby made him sincere and caring, Roger Moore was witty, Timothy Dalton’s portrayal was the darkest, Pierce Brosnan added charm and Daniel Craig’s 007 is ruthless.
However, some things should always remain the same – not only Bond’s skin colour, but also his sex.
It was one thing to make M female. Both on screen and in real life, women like Judi Dench make convincing figures of authority.
But one thing no woman can ever truly do is play the sexist, misogynist dinosaur that M calls Bond in Goldeneye. Make 007 into a woman and you might as well turn Black Beauty into a donkey.
