GDN Reader's View: On the meter


I received an SMS from the Electricity and Water Authority saying they were unable to visit my property.
To avoid a meter estimation I provided them within 24 hours my meter reading.
I live in a residential complex with multiple buildings containing around 80 flats.
Entry is through a main gate manned 24 hours by security personnel.
Exactly in front of the main gate and security room is the room on the ground floor containing electricity meters and the water pumping system.
This room is always open, 24 hours a day.
Water supplier trucks, food delivery boys, laundrymen, municipality waste collection vans and postmen all enter it without any hindrance, apart from identification scrutiny at the main gate.
To say the meters could not be accessed needs no comment.
It reminded me of a situation at my Karachi residence, where for six months I received inflated electricity bills based on a meter estimation which is called “average billing” in Pakistan.
After complaining it was claimed a mad dog in the area prevented the honourable meter reader from visiting my residence there.
I never got an answer to my very logical question: what breed was the dog that barked only at the electricity meter reader, but allowed uninterrupted access to the gas meter reader, postman, cleaners and vendors?
Last month it was claimed a “shortage of time” facing inspectors during Ramadan was to blame for a large number of residents in Bahrain getting inflated bills.
A shortage of time!
