A MAN jailed for five years for firing a gun during a fight has lodged an objection against his sentence.
The 33-year-old Saudi led policemen on a chase in Exhibition Avenue after he fired a shot in the air from a 7.65mm gun as he brawled with three Bahraini men in December last year, according to court documents.
He was arrested before he led them to the gun which he had hidden in the dashboard of his Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicle.
The High Criminal Court jailed him for five years and fined him BD500.
He lodged an objection at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court which adjourned his case until September 24.
The defendant denied assault and possessing and using an unlicensed firearm.
He admitted he had got into a fight with three Bahraini men but said he had not used his gun.
“I forgot my weapon in the vehicle and I told policemen about it,” he said in his statement to prosecutors.
“I got into a fight with three Bahraini men in Exhibtion Avenue and when policemen arrived I gave them my gun.
“The weapon was from Saudi Arabia and I was not going to use it in Bahrain.”
An Egyptian, who witnessed the incident, described his shock when he saw the defendant firing his weapon.
“It felt like I was watching a movie,” the 32-year-old told prosecutors in a statement.
“I was in Exhibtion Avenue getting food at around 1.20am on the day of the incident when I saw three Bahraini men beating up a Saudi man (defendant).
“The Saudi man was intoxicated and he swore at them (the Bahrainis) first.
“He then went to his vehicle and grabbed a gun and I could not believe my eyes.
“I thought he was going to shoot everyone in the street.
“He then fired a shot in the air before he got into his vehicle.
“Seconds later a police vehicle chased after him.”
