East Riffa edged out neighbours Riffa 2-1 at the start of the second week of action in the Nasser bin Hamad Football Premier League held at Bahrain National Stadium pitch last night.
In the other match played at Al Ahli Club Stadium, Manama defeated Al Hidd 2-1.
East Riffa earned their second victory in two matches and they are now on top of the league table with six points, while Riffa lost their first match, good for three points.
It was East Riffa who scored first in the 27th minute when Mohammed Daej crossed the ball to find Spanish forward Alex who netted the ball.
Two minutes later, East Riffa made it 2-0 through Sami Al Hussaini, who received a timely cross from Faisal Bu Dahoom, and had no trouble to net the ball.
Riffa reduced the margin to 2-1 in the 42nd minute, when Mohammed Marhoon sent a powerful shot that went straight into the left side of East Riffa goalkeeper Ibrahim Lutfallah.
Riffa could have scored an equaliser just a minute before half-time when Kumail Al Aswad sent a free kick, but was saved brilliantly by the East Riffa goalkeeper.
Riffa coach Ali Ashoor made a number of substitutions hoping to equalise the score, but East Riffa wisely dictated the tempo of the match the rest of the way.
Manama’s victory was their first in two matches after they lost to Riffa 4-0 in the first week. It gave Manama their first three points, while Al Hidd played their first match this season, as their first week match against Muharraq was postponed due to Muharraq’s participation in the Super Cup.
Manama scored first in the ninth minute of the first half through Kalo with a fine header that went straight into the net.
Al Hidd equalised through a penalty kick in the 24th minute through Mohammed Abdulwahab as the first half ended 1-1.
Manama hit the winning goal in the 74th minute through Ali Habeeb, who helped his team Manama earn their first three points this season.
