Bahrain’s Mimi Belete set a new event record en route to winning the women’s race in the 19th Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in Canada.
Mimi overcame an intense, late-race battle with defending champion Marta Megra of Ethiopia to win in two hours 22 minutes 29 seconds, which was also a new Personal Best.
Her time shattered the previous event record of 2:22:43, held previously by Koren Yal of Ethiopia and Sharon Cherop of Kenya.
“I trained very well,” Mimi was quoted as saying after the race. “I know I was going to be competitive.
I know I was going to run my best time, my personal best. That’s how I won.”
