Budaiya shocked defending champions Muharraq 3-2 in a postponed match of the Nasser bin Hamad Football Premier League at Muharraq Club Stadium last night.
Meanwhile, at Bahrain National Stadium, Riffa defeated Malkiya 2-0.
Budaiya pulled off one of the most shocking results of the league this year, stunning mighty Muharraq at their home turf. It was also Budaiya’s first victory this season after two defeats and one draw, while Muharraq lost their second match in four games. Budaiya and Muharraq now have four points each.
Budaiya led the first half 2-0, thanks to Ahmed Al Sheroogi and Mohammed Makki who scored in the 26th and 34th minutes respectively. Muharraq reduced the margin to 2-1 in the second half with a goal by Abdulla Abdo in the 59th minute. Budaiya then scored a brilliant goal through a free kick by Ahmed Al Sheroogi to lead 3-1.
Muharraq reduced the margin to 3-2 in the 80th minute through Abdulla Abdo but failed to equalise in the remaining minutes.
In the other match, Riffa topped the league table with nine points after defeating Malkiya 2-0.
The first half ended goalless, with Riffa missing a penalty kick in the 21st minute by Nigerian Oache.
Riffa finally scored in the 67th minute through Kumail Al Aswad and went on to make it 2-0 when Emanuel netted in injury time.
