BAHRAIN moved one victory away from clinching the title in the 21st Arab Volleyball Championship yesterday following a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-19) sweep of Palestine in their penultimate match of the competition in Cairo.

Bahrain stay undefeated after five games. They now play their final fixture tonight against hosts Egypt at 9pm, Bahrain time.

The Egyptians are also expected to head into tonight’s contest against Bahrain with an unbeaten mark. They played Oman in a match scheduled for late last night.

In other games today, Palestine take on Algeria and Iraq battle Oman.

Starting the match for Bahrain yesterday were skipper Nasser Anan, Mohammed Yaqoob, Mohammed Anan, Hussain Al Haiki, Mohammed Jassim and libero Ayman Haroona.

The rest of the squad, coached by veteran Bahraini tactician Yousef Khalifa, include Ali Al Sairafi, Yousif Khalid, Abbas Al Khabbaz, Mahmood Al Afya, Hassan Al Haddad and Hussain Sultan.

With a win tonight, Bahrain will be looking to add to the two titles they won previously, first in 1992 and again in 2008. In the last edition in 2016, which was also held in Egypt, the hosts were the winners after beating Bahrain in the final. Iraq finished third.

Arab Volleyball Association chairman and Bahrain Volleyball Association president Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa attended Bahrain’s game yesterday and he later congratulated them on their victory. Shaikh Ali also wished them the best of success against Egypt.
