ALI Khonji and Abdulla Al Dosary were last night crowned champions of the Veterans’ Over-45 Doubles category in the 32nd GPIC Tennis Championship, being played at Bahrain Tennis Club in Juffair.
Khonji and Al Dosary clinched their crown following a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ronaldo Anacin and Randy Regalla in the final.
It was a fitting ending to a fine tournament campaign for Khonji and Al Dosary. They never conceded a set en route to claiming their winners’ trophy, and allowed no more than three games for their opponents in a set.
The result crowned the competition’s sixth champions.
Khonji and Al Dosary joined the other division winners including Hassan Abdulredha and Karim Abdulredha in the Men’s Super Doubles, Khalifa Rashdan and John Kaye in the Men’s Doubles, Anacin in the Veterans’ Over-45 Singles, Salman Hassan in the Men’s Singles, and Hanna Espinosa and Thess Corral in the Women’s Doubles.
Another two champions will be determined today, with the final of both the Men’s Super Singles and the Women’s Singles taking place.
It is set to be a family affair in the Men’s Super Singles title-decider, as brothers Elyas Abdulredha and Hassan face off.
Qualified
Elyas qualified for the match following a hard-earned 7-6 (3), 1-6, 10-7 super tie-break victory over Janji Soquino in one semi-final yesterday. In the other, Hassan beat the other Abdulredha brother Karim 6-3, 6-2.
Elyas will now be looking to claim the coveted crown, while Hassan will be looking to add to his champions’ trophy in the Men’s Super Doubles.
Their final is scheduled to get underway at 4.30pm at the BTC hardcourts.
That match will be followed by the Women’s Singles title-decider, set to be played between Hanna and Lana Masukat.
Like Hassan Abdulredha, Hanna will be vying for a second title in the tournament tonight. She had already won with partner Thess in the Women’s Double, and now she will be looking to add the Women’s Singles crown.
Hanna advanced to the final after defeating Nazley Nader in their final four bout, while Lana made it through following a straight-q’’’Qsets victory against Stanzi Stuijt.
The Women’s Singles final is scheduled to be played at 6.30pm at BTC.
All are welcome to watch the match at BTC.
