BAHRAIN International Circuit (BIC) is getting all geared up to host the landmark 15th edition of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix next year.
At a Press conference held last night, BIC announced several exciting details for the highly anticipated desert night race, which is scheduled to take place over four days for the first time ever from March 28 to 31.
It will be the second round of the 2019 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, and it once again promises to be a spectacular extravaganza of racing and entertainment.
BIC Commercial Director Sherif Al Mahdy and Gulf Air Director of Marketing Mohamed Jamsheer spoke at the conference held at The Avenues – Bahrain, revealing some of the major details of the Formula 1 weekend.
Also in attendance were BIC Chairman Arif Rahimi and BIC Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa.
Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Kresimir Kucko commented: “This is an exciting time for Gulf Air and the Kingdom of Bahrain as a whole.
“We are delighted to once again welcome visitors to Bahrain to attend the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2019. There’s so much to look forward to and, on behalf of Gulf Air, we are honoured to be longstanding partners with Formula 1 and BIC to bring the race to Bahrain year after year
Aside from Formula 1, there will be plenty of other action in the Grand Prix with two support races: the FIA Formula 2 Championship and the Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East.
Formula 2 is widely regarded as the chief feeder series to Formula 1. Many of today’s drivers competing in the top flight have been graduates of Formula 2, which was formerly known as GP2.
Although the Formula 2 season calendar has yet to be released, Bahrain is the traditional season-opening round of the season and it is expected to be the same next year.
It will be joined on the weekend’s programme by the GT3 Cup Challenge, one of the most popular championship to come from this region.
Grow
The series will be celebrating its 10th season and it continues to grow each year. Drivers from all over the world come and compete in this series, which will be holding its championship-finale during the Grand Prix weekend.
Meanwhile, Al Mahdy also spoke about two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso swapping cars with NASCAR superstar Jimmie Johnson at BIC on Monday next week.
The one-day event will be right after the 2018 Formula 1 season-finale in Abu Dhabi.
This is not the first Formula 1-NASCAR driver swap, as back in 2003 Jeff Gordon switched seats with Williams-BMW driver Juan Pablo Montoya, while in 2011 Lewis Hamilton and Tony Stewart switched cars at Watkins Glen race track in the state of New York in the US.
