RIFFA scored in injury time to hold defending champions Muharraq to a 1-1 draw in the eighth week match of Nasser bin Hamad Football Premier League played last night at Bahrain National Stadium.
In other matches, East Riffa and Al Najma drew with Budaiya 0-0, and Manama 1-1, respectively.
The match between Muharraq and Riffa – Bahrain’s own version of “Classico” – was the most important game of the week. Riffa stayed on top of the table after settling for a draw.
Riffa now have 19 points, while Muharraq are in third place with 14 points.
After the first half ended 0-0, Muharraq came back strongly in the second half scoring in the 72nd minute through Jamal Rashid’s free kick.
Muharraq fans were already celebrating when all of a sudden, Sayed Redha Isa hit a header for the equaliser leaving them shocked at the outcome.
Al Najma scored first in the 62nd minute through Mouhamadou, and Manama’s equaliser was scored by Mahmood Abdulrahman in the 66th minute.
Manama now have 15 points, good for second place, while Al Najma have 13 points for fourth place.
