RIFFA and Al Ettihad posted deserving victories last night as the eighth week of action continued in the 2018/2019 Zain Bahrain Basketball League.

Riffa cruised past Bahrain Club 96-79 while Ettihad powered past Nuwaidrat 73-62.

Both games were played at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Riffa lit the nets up in the second and third quarters to help clinch the win.

After finishing the first quarter deadlocked at 16-all, the victors took command with a 31-point second period as they went ahead 47-33 at the half. They stretched their lead even further to 75-54 after the third quarter, before sailing to the final buzzer in the fourth.

Star forward Mohammed Kuwayed led Riffa with 21 points in the win. American professional Joseph Jones added 15 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, while Subah Hussain had an all-around effort of 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Hassan Alkhaja chipped in with 11 including three three-pointers.

For Bahrain Club, Lester Ferguson from the US paced his team with 28 points and 14 boards. Skipper Fadhel Abbas added 14 in the loss.

Meanwhile, in yesterday’s other game, Ettihad needed to overturn a second-half deficit en route to defeating Nuwaidrat.

Things were tied at 15-apiece after the opening period, and then Ettihad were able to take a slim 32-26 advantage into the locker rooms. In the third, however, Nuwaidrat stormed back and reclaimed the lead at 51-47 heading into the fourth.

It was all Ettihad, however, in the pay-off period. They outscored their rivals by 15, 26-11, to finish strong and power to the win.

Hashem Alwadaie had 21 points to top the Ettihad scoresheet. Serbian professional Mile Ilic had his usual monster game, finishing with 10 markers, 21 rebounds and six assits.

Nuwaidrat skipper Hussain Hassan led his team in the loss with 15 points. Hassan Madan added 13, including three triples.

League action continues tonight with another two games on schedule, which will wrap up the eighth week of play. At 5.45pm, Sitra Club take on Muharraq followed at 7.45pm by Al Najma facing Al Hala.
