Award-winning musical on screen

Stephanie Sutcliffe

A MUSICAL called The Umbrellas of Cherbourg will be screened tonight at the Bahrain Cinema Club.

The 1964 film follows a beautiful young Frenchwoman named Geneviève who works in a small-town boutique selling umbrellas and falls for dashing mechanic named Guy.

Their brief romance is interrupted when Guy is drafted to serve in the Algerian War.

Though pregnant by Guy, Geneviève marries an older businessman, Roland, and begins to move on with her life.

Throughout the film, all the characters’ dialogue is conveyed through song.

Directed by Jacques Demy, the film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Film, Best Song, Best Soundtrack and Best Original Screenplay. It also won three awards at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, including its top prize, the Golden Palm.
