MOHAMMED Kuwayed lifted Riffa to a narrow 88-83 victory over Al Ettihad last night in the 2018-2019 Zain Bahrain Basketball League.
Kuwayed score nine of his game-high 32 points in the final two minutes of play to help Riffa eke out the hard-earned result.
Meanwhile, Al Ahli defeated Sitra 81-73 in yesterday’s other game.
Both contests were part of the 12th week of action in the current season at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.
Riffa needed to dig deep into their arsenal to beat a battling the Ettihad side.
Ettihad’s Hassan Helal scored with a high-arching driving lay-up to tie the proceedings at 78-all with exactly two minutes remaining.
Kuwayed then showed why he is one of the top players in Bahrain. Operating on the right wing, the superstar forward swished home his first of two three-pointers in the last two minutes. He followed that with a free-throw to make it 82-78, and then Ali Ghadeer sank his own triple to bring Ettihad back to within one, 81-82.
However, Kuwayed buried his second three-pointer to restore their four-point advantage with just 29 seconds to go.
A Mohammed Abdulmajeed free-throw and another pair of charities from Kuwayed sealed victory.
Kuwayed’s 32 points included six three-pointers.
Subah Hussain added 11 points as their only other player in double-figures. He also had 10 rebounds.
American professional Sean Williams chipped in with six points and 12 rebounds.
Seven-foot Serbian Mile Ilic paced Ettihad with 28 points, 18 rebounds and three blocked shots. Ghadeer added 19 markers including five triples and Sayed Mohammed Hameed had 15.
In yesterday’s other game, Sitra took a quick lead in the first-half but Ahli came roaring back in a low-scoring third quarter, where they put in just 19 points while allowing only six or Sitra. Ahli then did well to hold on to their advantage in the final canto.
American professional Marcel Jones scored 26 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Ahli in the win. Ali Aqeel added 14 and Sayed Hashim Habib contributed 11.
Mansour Kasse from Senegal scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Sitra, who also got 15 from Mohamed Abdulla and 14 from Mohayad Ameer.
League action continues tonight with Bahrain’s under-18 national team facing Samaheej at 5.45pm followed by national champions Manama taking on Al Hala at 7.45pm.
