BRIEF SCORES: Chennai Super Kings 111 for 3 (du Plessis 43*, Narine 2-18) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 108 for 9 (Russell 50*, Chahar 3-20) by seven wickets.
CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings beat a misfiring Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets to jump to the top of the table with 10 points in the Indian Premier League last night.
Chasing a below-par target of 109, Chennai openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis got off to a decent start on a sluggish pitch, adding 18 runs for the opening wicket. Sunil Narine got a major breakthrough as he struck Watson (17) and in quick succession dismissed Suresh Raina (14), only to see a 46-run partnership between du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu.
Kolkata tried their best to pull things back in a one-sided contest. Despite sending Rayudu (21) back off leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, an unbeaten 30-run stand by du Plessis and Kedar Jadhav helped Chennai seal the match with 16 balls to spare.
Earlier, Chennai rattled the Kolkata line-up after the latter was sent in to bat. Andre Russell sparkled amidst the collapse with an unbeaten 50.
With the victory, Chennai now leads the points table with five wins and one loss while Kolkata have slipped to the second place with four wins and two losses.
