The middle school department of the AMA International School-Bahrain (AMAIS) recently organised a maths fair at its premises, showcasing a total of 30 student projects.
The projects ranged from measuring real-life objects using mathematical formulas, integrating science concepts in developing the mathematical models, and collaborating scale drawing equations in developing house models.
The students worked in groups which allowed them to enhance their team work and collaboration skills.
They were judged mainly on their presentation skills, the extent of their conceptual knowledge and the ability to explain their projects with their understanding of the lessons.
They were also judged on the creativity and originality of their projects which were evaluated to the degree to which they were curriculum related.
A champion trophy was awarded to the winners of each grade level and all participants received a certificate of participation.
Grade seven winners were Falak Farhan, Goh Yi YI, Jozelle Angeli and Thanchanok Khunbun, who made a project measuring the circumference of the earth. They created a model of the earth using craft materials and researched the diameter to calculate the circumference using the formula taught in class.
Grade eight winners Jood Nedhal and Hussain modelled a project on the theme of integers where they were able to perform any mathematical operation using integer values ranging from -10 to +10.
The grade nine winners Alhanoof Ahmed Juma and Shereen Hamad Rashid developed a project on counting numbers.
Using creative means, the students prepared a mathematical model that would allow them to add numbers in an efficient manner.
