A proposal to set up a special national committee to regulate and administer Kuwait’s demography is under study.
MPs Mohammad Al-Dallal, Essa Al-Kandari, Osama Al-Shaheen and Khalil Al-Saleh submitted the proposal to Kuwait’s National Assembly.
Under the move, the committee would regulate and administer Kuwait’s demography so as to prevent the country from having an ‘excessive number of expatriates’ which according to them would ‘threaten the state’s identity', according to Alqabas.
The proposed committee would set special policies and plans to adjust the current demographic structure in view of the developmental plan, said the sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The committee would be mandated to draw up a national strategy to reduce the overall number of expatriates to make 60% of the total population within ten years.
Under the proposal, each nationality shall be granted a quota not to exceed, on the condition that no expatriate community exceeds the cap 40% of the total number of expats arriving in Kuwait.
