Traditional boat captain (Noukhadha) Khalid Ali won the Cup of Shaikh Mohammed, son of His Majesty the King’s representative for Charity Work and Youth Affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Ali won the third Al Hair contest to extract oysters in the traditional way. The contest was held as part of the second edition of the Nasser bin Hamad Maritime Heritage Season.
Ali beat more than 140 participants who were in the fray, collecting the largest quantity of extracted oysters.
Ali also won the second edition (Al Hair 2) which was held for the cup of Shaikh Abdulla, son of SCYS first deputy chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Ali won the trophy after collecting pearls weighing 2.001 grams, followed by Jassim Ahmed (1.820gm), Badr Al Azemi (1.524gm), Abdulla Salman (1.412gm), Youssef Sarhan (1.370gm), Mohammed Ibrahim (1.306 gm), Tariq Al Bourashid (1.274 gm), Nabil Hassan ((1.128 gm), Ahmed Al Thawadi ( (1.110 gm) and Fahd Al Faheed (1.080 gm). They all spent five uninterrupted hours at sea as part of the contest.
Another Al Hair contest will be held next week on extracting oysters by using modern techniques. Four cups will be distributed.
