HUSSAIN Alkhayyat fired in a last-gasp winner in Bahrain Olympic team’s triumph over their Iraqi counterparts last night in an international friendly match played at Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Stadium at Muharraq Club in Arad.
Alkhayyat battled hard against the visitors’ defence and, despite the pressure, was able to slot the ball home in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal the 1-0 result.
The Iraqi defence failed to clear and Alkhayyat took full advantage, beating opposing goalkeeper Ali Khadim with a left-footed effort that was literally Bahrain’s final kick of the game.
The result gave the home side a victory from two tune-up games played by both teams over a span of four days in Bahrain. Iraq had won the first contest 2-0, with goals from Hussein Jabbar and Mohammed Qassim.
Bahrain head coach Samie Ben Chammam fielded a first 11 that included goalkeeper Yousuf Habib, Alkhayyat, Mohamed Marhoon, Salim Adil, Ahmed Saleh, Sayed Hashim Issa, Abdulrahman Ahmady, Saud Alasam, Hassan Alkarani, Jassim Salama and Abbas Alasfoor.
Iraq head coach Abdulgani Shahad, on the other hand, started with a team comprising Khadim, Jabbar, Muntadher Sattar, Abdulabbas Ayad, Hasan Raed, Murad Subeh, Luay Majid, Amir Fouad, Hammood Mashaan, Ali Yousif and Abbas Mohamad.
The Bahrainis used the friendlies as part of their preparations for the Asian Football Confederation U-23 Championship, which takes place in January in Thailand.
