VIVEK Kolluru took a firm step towards qualifying for the main draw of the ITF Juniors Tennis Championship with an emphatic 6-1, 6-2 victory at the Bahrain Tennis Club in Juffair.
The top-seeded Indian takes on Elias Anwar of France in today’s final qualifying round and the winner makes it to the main draw of the competition which starts tomorrow.
Elias won both his matches yesterday with much to spare to take up a place in the final qualifying round.
The Frenchman first saw off India’s Yuvraj Kashyap 6-0, 6-1 in the morning and came back in the afternoon to sail past Bahrain’s Mohammed Aljishi without losing a game.
Great Britain’s Daniel Abernethy also breezed through his two matches to set up a final qualifying clash against Paul Blair.
Daniel saw off India’s Agriya Yadav 6-2, 6-0 and had an even easier time taming Bahrain’s Jaber Abdulaal 6-0, 6-1.
The American Blair also had an easy time beating Philippines’ Neil Joshram Clemena 6-0, 6-0 and Suliman Al Musfer of Saudi Arabia 6-1, 6-2.
Another Great Britain youngster Archie Turner had the easiest of time as he booked a berth in the final qualifying round without losing a game in both his matches.
His first victim was Swaraaj Pal Singh of India and the second Bahrain Essa Al Qattan.
US’ Yousef Manna, on the other hand, had to really work hard to keep his hopes of making it to the main draw.
Yousef had to first dig deep to tame a battling Mohammed Saadeddin of Saudi Arabia 6-3, 7-5 and returned in the afternoon to put in another solid performance to beat Ethan Milgan of Indian 6-2, 7-6(4).
Another Indian Sparsh Parmar rallied from a set down to beat James Blair of the US 4-6, 7-6(0), 10-6 after having received a bye in the first round.
Alexander Borup filled up the last spot in the final qualifying round scoring two fine victories over Josef Belnaqita of the UAE 6-0, 6-0 and Yasseen Kilani of Egypt 6-4, 6-3.
In the girls section, Perihan Auf of Egypt was the most comfortable winner beating Eira Gabrielle Alegria of the Philippines 6-0, 6-1.
Aryana Bartlett of Great Britain and Shreya Menon of India had to work a little harder to tame Jannah Elnemr 6-2, 6-3 and Jan Inzi Mataac of the Philippines 6-2, 6-3 respectively to book a berth in the final qualifying round scheduled for today.
The four winners in the boys and girls section today will go into the main draw.
The event is being held under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa and sponsored by Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs. Ebrahim K Kanoo, Banagas and Bapco are the gold sponsors.
