Felipe Mikkelsen of Denmark held off Britain’s William Jansen after two tough sets to advance to the second round of the second Shine Bahrain Super Series ITF Junior Tournament yesterday.
Both sets were decided by tie-breakers as Mikkelsen won 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in the most exciting match on the opening day of the tournament, being held at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town.
Second-seeded Garv Bahl of India moved past Britain’s Oliver Richards 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, top seed Haktan Garayev of Azerbaijan bowed out after he retired in the third set (6-4, 4-6, 2-1) against France’s Pierre Antoine Tailleu.
In the girls’ section, India’s Srihitha Jaligama shocked second seed Caroline Fawzy of Egypt in a thrilling three-setter 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5). Girls’ top seed Hagar Ramadan of Egypt got a bye into the second round.
