Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Abdulrahman Askar congratulated the Bahrain national swimming team on return after dominant performances in the 13th GCC Short Course Swimming Championship at Hamad Aquatics Complex in Doha.
The nationals took 50 medals – 10 gold, 28 silver and 12 bronze – at the four-day event which concluded last Saturday.
Qatar topped the medal table with 57 medals (32 gold medals, 15 silver medals, 10 bronze) in various age group categories. The prestigious event brought together four teams – hosts Qatar, the UAE, Oman and Bahrain.
Askar said it was a new record for Bahrain in the history of the competition, which came as a result of the support from Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), led by Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Work and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman and BOC President Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Bahrain’s previous highest medal haul was in 1991 in Muscat, where they clinched 32 medals in total.
The BOC general secretary also commended the efforts of Bahrain Swimming Association board, headed by president Shaikh Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.
In the previous edition of this regional competition, which also took place in Doha held last year, Bahrain claimed 35 medals.
