BAHRAIN begin their campaign today in the 19th Asian Men’s Handball Championship in Kuwait taking on New Zealand at 1pm in a Group ‘A’ clash.
This event is also the qualifier for the World Handball Championship to be held in Egypt next year with the semi-finalists in Kuwait booking a berth.
The Bahrain team landed in Kuwait yesterday with a 19-member squad under coach Aron Kristjansson, a former Iceland international.
The third team in Bahrain’s group is Iran whom they take on on Saturday.
The 13 teams in the fray are divided into four groups.
Group ‘B’ features China, Japan and Qatar. Group ‘C’ includes Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea while Hong Kong, Iraq, the UAE and hosts Kuwait are in Group ‘D’.
Bahrain late last year won the Olympic qualifying event in Doha to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Games.
The top two teams reach the quarter-finals of the championship which concluded on January 27.
