Bahrain: A probe has been launched by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) into circumstances surrounding the death of a convict while attempting to run away from police.
SIU member Abdulrahman Al Ma’awda said the Public Prosecution received a report on March 31 that the convict entered a building under construction in Shahrakan while police were trying to arrest him.
He jumped from a second floor window and fell and was taken to the BDF Hospital with severe injuries.
The Public Prosecution examined the scene and commissioned experts to collect evidence. It also listened to witnesses who confirmed that police had arrested the convict in a house but he managed to escape and hide in a building under construction. He had been sentenced to five years in prison.
The Public Prosecution yesterday received information that he had died.
Meanwhile, the Ombudsman secretariat general submitted to SIU a file including measures taken related to the incident. Investigations are ongoing pending the doctor’s report.
