A decision on whether sports competitions in the country should be suspended or resumed will be taken on July 1, says Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) first deputy chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The decision, Shaikh Khalid said, would be made after taking into consideration the views of international and intercontinental federations for each game.
Shaikh Khalid, who was chairing a virtual meeting to discuss the implementation the directives of His Majesty the King’s representative for Charity Work and Youth Affairs and SCYS chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa to combat Covid-19 in line with the decisions of the co-ordination committee, said that Bahrain has successfully dealt with the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to the measures taken by the committee, headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier.
The meeting was attended by many leading figures in the field of youth and sports in Bahrain, including SCYS secretary-general Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs Aymen bin Tawfiq Al Moayyed, SCYS assistant secretary-general Dr Abdulrahman Sadiq Askar, BOC secretary-general Mohammed Hassan Al Nusf and heads of sports federations.
Shaikh Khalid stated that Shaikh Nasser’s directives strengthened the implementation of the measures taken to protect the Bahraini sports community from the risk of infection.
“We are confident that the kingdom will overcome Covid-19 through unity. Everyone has the responsibility to comply with the measures and procedures adopted to combat the disease,” he said.
During the meeting, Shaikh Khalid reviewed the views presented by the heads of sports federations regarding their tournaments and competitions this season, and the strategy the federations would follow to resume or suspend the season.
Shaikh Khalid also hailed the positive response of the sports federations through the measures they have implemented, such as suspending its activities in the ongoing season as a precautionary step to prevent the spread of Covid-19, in addition to their participation in spreading social awareness on the importance of adhering to safety measures.
