Where do MPs think up these proposed policies? I am, of course, talking about the proposed ban on expatriates above the age of 50 continuing to work in the kingdom. I personally know many c-level expat executives working in Bahrain who are well into their 50s, some of them are in their 60s. If these people were not performing, don’t you think their employers would intervene? Why are you proposing to take this choice away from companies?
Chief executives of some of the biggest corporates are well above this age – Tim Cook (Apple), Lloyd Blankfein (Goldman Sachs) and Muhtar Kent (Coca Cola) to name a few. I bet Doug Mcmillon (Walmart CEO) must be having sleepless nights as he is 49 years of age!
What medical evidence is this proposal based on? Are they saying that everyone (apart from Bahrainis of course) goes to bed on the eve of their 50th birthday and wakes up the following day an incompetent moron? What vaccine are locals taking to protect themselves from this terrible affliction?
I know it is all about increasing performance and efficiency of employees, that I understand. So why, in the same article, are you proposing that Bahrainis can get a CR and start their own business whilst in full-time employment? I have had the experience of setting up my own business in Bahrain and I can tell you it is impossible to make it a success unless it has your full-time attention and the hours you need to put in go far beyond your typical nine to five. So these people are either going to be running their business on their current employers’ time or they are going to fail. It is as simple as that.
So please tell me, how is that going to help productivity at the workplace? These employers will need to hire more staff to make up for lost time due to locals spending most of the working day managing their own businesses. And, it will also make the hiring of expats far more attractive as there will be no risk of them wasting company time and money, managing their own ventures.
Well done MPs, you have just made every company that employs Bahrainis a potential venture capitalist. But, instead of a return on their investment, they get a huge downturn in productivity, just what they need!
MPs, please stop feeding us nonsense excuses for your agenda-driven changes, no one is falling for it.
I have my own ideas as to the real reason why you want expats over 50 kicked out of their jobs and it has nothing to do with their inability to perform. However, I will keep those ideas to myself for the time being.
