Manama: A woman jailed for life for stabbing her husband 74 times in a frenzied knife attack has lost her appeal.

Sumaya Navab John, from India, was previously convicted of premeditated murder by the High Criminal Court, which sentenced her to the equivalent of 25 years behind bars.

Her appeal against the verdict was thrown out by the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court yesterday.

Ms John is said to have repeatedly stabbed her husband, Siraj Al Din Ebrahim, during a brawl about an alleged affair.

Her sons Rayan and Riyadh, who were just five and nine, saw her thrust the knife into their father’s neck twice in April 2014, according to court documents.

Judges heard she then gave her younger son the knife and asked him to hide it under the bed, ordering her children to look away while blood gushed from her husband’s naked body.

The couple argued frequently before the murder about Ms John’s alleged affair with a building contractor of their home in India.

She is said to have plotted to kill him during his sleep as he recovered from an illness, so she would be able to overpower him more easily.

Her children woke up after hearing their father’s pleas for help as she plunged the weapon into his body 74 times.

Ms John will be deported after completing her 25-year sentence.

She earlier claimed during questioning that her husband of eight years took his own life by stabbing himself in the neck, chest and abdomen because of financial problems.

However, an Egyptian medical examiner told judges it was simply “not possible” for someone to kill himself in this way.

He added Ms John sustained defensive wounds, suggesting Mr Ebrahim fought back as she stabbed him.
