Highway safety reviewed

Bahrain: Safety requirements along a major Bahrain highway which has seen eight fatal accidents, including four involving pedestrians, was reviewed yesterday.

Works, Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs works affairs under-secretary Ahmed Al Khayyat visited Khalifa Al Khabeer Highway in Muharraq along with roads assistant under-secretary Huda Fakhro, technical services director Entisar Al Kubaisi, roads planning design director Kadhim Abdul Latif and engineers.

They discussed implementation of concrete barriers and pedestrian barriers along the central reservation to increase traffic safety. 

The first phase of the
project, which comprises
installation of pedestrian barriers to provide safe crossing at traffic signals, has been approved.

Mr Al Khayyat said the project aims to reduce
traffic accidents rates along this highway; as 88
accidents occurred in the past five years, with eight deaths, four of which involved
pedestrians according to reports from the Traffic General Directorate.
