AMA and Al Taawon schools will clash in the final of the secondary stage boys’ football championship at the ongoing third School Mini Olympics.
In the semi-finals of the competition staged yesterday at the Bahrain Football Association in Riffa, Al Taawon made it to the final after beating Al Naseem School 1-0, setting up their title clash with AMA, who edged Al Noor School 2-1 in the other semi-final match.
In the intermediate stage, Riffa School recorded a 6-1 victory over Sacred Heart School and will now face off with Kanoo International School, who defeated AMA School 2-0 in a closely contested affair.
The penultimate day of matches in the secondary stage girl’s championship took place yesterday at Riffa Club gym in Hunainiya where Al Maarifa secured the title after a 1-1 draw with main opponents Al Hekma.
The result extended Al Maarifa’s top spot in this seven-team single round robin competition with a 4-1-0 record and a no-bearing match remaining against New Millennium School tomorrow.
Al Hekma, who needed a win to revive their title chances, now fight for second place and their chances were given a major boost after a resounding 8-0 victory over the Indian School in a match played earlier yesterday.
In the other matches, the New Millennium School edged Al Noor International School 2-0, Al Maarifa School beat Omayma 2-0, while New Millennium School and AMA drew goalless.
Mini School action continues today with the first day of athletics and athletics for disabled – both taking place at Khalifa Sports City Stadium – in addition to the swimming contests at the Bahrain Swimming Association pool in Isa Town.
The second day of swimming events features races for primary and intermediate boys’ stages at Khalifa Sports City’s Bahrain Swimming Association pool in Isa Town.
More than 3,000 students, representing 16 government and 18 private schools, are competing in the third edition of the Mini Olympics, which will run until Thursday with the closing ceremony planned at the Bahrain Volleyball Association’s hall in Riffa.
The event is being organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. A record nine sports events are lined up this year, including three team sports – football, basketball and volleyball.
The remaining sports are athletics, aquathlon, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and athletics for disabled.
