Kuwait City: Discrepancies found by customs authorities in Kuwait with regards to the quantities of subsidised foodstuffs have led to 51 accountants working in Kuwait’s cooperative societies to be referred to Public Prosecution.
The suspects were arrested and referred after officials at the Salmi border point thwarted an attempt to smuggle out of the country large quantities of subsidised foodstuffs such as rice, powdered milk, bread and oil on two trucks destined to head for more than one Arab country, Al Rai newspaper reported.
The value of the seized foodstuffs is believed to be in the tens of thousands of dinars and transport companies have been held legally responsible for the ‘smuggling’ of the goods.
Al Rai quoted ministry sources as saying that it was not permissible to sell or pass on subsidised foodstuffs to others.
