Al Najma and East Riffa have reached the King Cup quarterfinals after winning their round of 16 matches yesterday.
East Riffa defeated Budaiya 2-0 and Najma saw off Al Malkiya 2-1 on the first day of the pre-quarterfinals.
East Riffa got off to a positive start at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town, as Mohammed Al Romaihi scored the opening goal in the sixth minute. The second goal was scored in the 33rd minute through Lucas. Budaiya’s attempts to strike back were foiled by their rival defenders while East Riffa failed to extend their lead as the second half remained goalless.
The other match of the evening, played at Al Ahli Stadium in Mahooz, was more exciting as Malkiya struck quite late in the second half to raise hopes of a comeback after trailing 0-2 against Najma.
Emmanuel scored the opener for Najma in the 24th minute as the first half ended 1-0. Najma extended their lead in the 69th minute through Arthur before Victor struck for Malkiya in the 78th minute. Najma’s cautious approach during the final minutes of the match ensured that no further damage was done.
The last-16 matches continue today when Al Hidd take on Galali at Khalifa Sports City Stadium and Al Ahli host Al Ittifaq at Al Ahli Stadium. Both games kick off at 5.45pm.
