Hosts Egypt defeated Chile 35-29 to secure their first two points in the opening game of the 2021 International Handball Federation (IHF) World Championship.
Egypt asserted their dominance from the very start, and they never trailed behind their South American counterparts.
They had at least a three point lead for the majority of the first-half which ended 18-11 in favour of the hosts. Zamalek player Yehia El Deraa was by far the most influential in the first 30 minutes, having scored all five of his shots.
Despite Chile’s efforts to reduce the gap in the second half, Egypt still managed to have the upper hand, ending the game six points ahead with a 35-29 scoreline.
Yehia El Deraa was given the Man of the Match award after having scored six goals and produced great defensive and offensive displays.
Egypt now top Group G with two points and will face North Macedonia, who replaced Czech Republic, on Saturday.
Bahrain will play their first match in Group D against defending champions Denmark tomorrow.
The tournament, which continues until January 30, consists of 32 teams.
