•
More than 2,500kg of rice has been donated to hundreds of workers who staged a march this week over unpaid wages. The Punjabi community and members of Punjabis United in Bahrain (PUB) delivered the donation yesterday to the men’s labour accommodation in Tubli. It was in response to an article in yesterday’s GDN, which documented how residents of the labour camp marched in the scorching heat from Tubli to the Diplomatic Area on Monday. They were intercepted by police near American Mission Hospital, in Manama, at around 10am and labour officials have since taken up their case with their employer, Orlando Construction Company

Women and girls are gathering at their neighbourhood beauty saloons to get their hands decorated with henna in preparation for Eid.

Some even invite henna designers to their own homes to avoid the rush.

Henna is a reddish-brown colouring made from a flowering plant that grows in regions of Africa and Asia.

Since the Bronze Age, people have used dried henna ground into paste to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather, silk and wool.

There are many henna designs and Arabic designs are famous for their simplicity. It is applied using a henna-filled cone.

Once the henna dries on the skin it is scraped off leaving behind a deep brown colour that stays for a few days.

 •
A prayer caller, or muezzin, performs the adhan, the call to prayer, at a Bahrain mosque. The ritual is performed five times every day, summoning Muslims to worship. The role of muezzin is important as members of the community rely on the adhan to keep an accurate prayer schedule, particularly during Ramadan - since at sunset it is a sign for them to break their fast. The muezzin faces the Qiblah, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, while performing the adhan. Historically, they climbed to the top of minarets and recited the call so as to be heard by those nearby, but these days the use of microphones and loudspeakers mean that is not necessary. •
A man reads a special Dua’a (supplication) at Al Ghadeer Mosque in Sitra to commemorate Laylat Al Qadr (the Night of Power) when Muslims believe the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. Thought to fall on one of the odd-numbered nights of the final 10 days of Ramadan, Laylat Al Qadr is said to be a night when the blessings and mercy of Allah are abundant, sins are forgiven and supplications accepted. The devout spend the night seeking Allah’s forgiveness by praying in mosques, reading the Quran, doing charity and giving back as well as offering supplication hoping that their good deeds coincide with Laylat Al Qadr. According to the Quran, the rewards reaped during Laylat Al Qadr are far greater than those earned on any other day during the year, equalling the rewards of 1,000 months of worship.

Picture: Sadiq Marzooq
