  • No Bahrainis were injured in a fire that broke out at a hotel in Najaf, Iraq. The Foreign Ministry confirmed with the Bahraini consulate in Najaf that there were no injuries or deaths among Bahrainis following the fire. At least four Iranian pilgrims were injured in the blaze at the Qubtan Hotel, according to media reports from Iraq and Iran. The fire at the hotel, located in the city’s old quarters, was caused by a short circuit. Above, the blaze engulfing the building.

  • A medical camp was held for Eskan Bank employees in co-operation with the Health Ministry to create awareness about the early detection of non-communicable chronic diseases.

  • <p>A NEW lounge, designed to depict the features of a tropical rainforest, has opened in Amwaj Islands. Located at Gulf Suites Hotel, Rainforest Lounge specialises in dining, hospitality, entertainment, drinks and fun. Present at the opening was President Group Bahrain managing director and chief executive Abdul Sattar, Gulf Suites Hotel general manager Antony Hurtis and Lona Real Estate general manager Chris Woodward.   • More than 3,000 ice creams were distributed to the local community as part of “Beat the Heat” campaign by VIVA Bahrain.   • Two Saudi nationals were injured in a four-car collision on King Fahad Causeway early yesterday morning. Sources said a man was driving towards Saudi Arabia at 2.30am when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle and collided with the cement barriers before smashing into another car driving in the same direction. The car then crashed into two other vehicles, resulting in two Saudi nationals suffering from injuries. They were transferred to Salmaniya Medical Complex.   • The King yesterday received at Safriya Palace Sunni Waqf (Endowment) Council chairman Dr Shaikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Hajiri, Jaafari Waqf (Endowment) Council chairman Shaikh Muhsin Abdulhussain Al Asfoor and members of the two councils. The tests, which took place at the American Mission Hospital in Manama, included ear and teeth inspections along with other basic checks and necessary treatment in cases where required.   • An Indo-Pak Food Festival was launched at The K Hotel’s Kolors Restaurant. The restaurant was transformed with the colours of India and Pakistan, with celebrations that included traditional dhol and bhangra music. Guests from the Indian and Pakistan clubs were invited to the launch of the event, which continues until today from 7.30pm onwards.   • Bahrain Commercial Facilities Company (BCFC) has been recertified to Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) version release 3.2 certification – an information security standard for organisations that handle branded credit cards from major card schemes. The certification was awarded to BCFC by qualified security assessor SISA Information Security after completion of auditing and compliance based on the requirements. BCFC chief executive Dr Adel Hubail received the certification from SISA Worldwide chief executive and founder Dharshan Shanthamurthy.

  • Ibn Al Nafees Hospital marked Osteoporosis Day by organising a campaign to raise awareness of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. Orthopaedic Surgery and Rheumatology clinics’ doctors attended. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. As a result, bones become weak and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from sneezing or minor bumps. Metabolic bone diseases are disorders of bone strength, usually caused by abnormalities of minerals (such as calcium or phosphorus), vitamin D, bone mass or bone structure.   • A beach clean-up campaign was organised by the Southern Municipality in collaboration with the Fisheries Directorate and waste management company Urbaser. The campaign, ‘Our Coasts’, aimed to clean the public coasts and started with the Bandar Al Dar Port in Sitra.   • Around 50 children took part in a Hiya Biya event. The celebration features children releasing baskets of plants and flowerpots into the sea and is based around the concept of sacrifice. A special event, “Ein Al Hayah”, was held at a farm in Nabih Saleh organised by Nabih Saleh Club, Nabih Saleh Charity Society and Bahrain Women Association for Human Development. All natural materials were used to make the Hiya Biya as part of the Eco Village to raise environmental awareness among children. Above, some of the children taking part in the activity.

  • <p>A special workshop was held at the Beacon Private School that was attended by teachers and senior officials.</p><p>It was led by Common Grounds Collaborative (CGC) founder Kevin Bartlett who conducted the training programme ahead of the school’s opening during the next academic year.</p><p>The CGC is a global network of educators, innovators and partners who share educational principles and exchange educational experiences among various member schools around the world.</p><p>The school, located in Hidd, has obtained Education Ministry approval to register students from kindergarten level to the fourth grade as a first stage.</p><p>School’s consultancy and development committee head Samir Chammaa said they are ready along with its academic and administrative staff to implement its philosophy of education through its future vision of research-based education and to develop independent learners.</p><p>The school plans to continue holding training programmes for staff and parents of the students on the educational system of CGC schools which is a global network of educators.</p><p>The Dadabhai Group is behind the BD8 million project, that covers an area of 30,660 square metres and can accommodate around 1,800 students, ranging from nursery to Grade 12.</p><p>Above, Mr Bartlett speaks during the training session attended by teachers.</p>

  • Students at St Christopher’s School have been treated to a close-up look at the hi-tech BMW i8, a plug-in hybrid sports car designed to combine style with sustainability. It was showcased by BMW dealer Euro Motors during a three-hour interactive workshop. “We are proud to witness the strong interest and curiosity from all the students who attended our workshop,” said Euro Motors BMW and MINI marketing manager Rashid Alzayani. “The BMW i8 resembles a strong foretaste on how our future in mobility will look like and we’re glad we had the opportunity to give the future generation a chance to reflect on the change they’ll be witnessing as they grow into professionals in their respective fields.”  Above, the BMW i8 being showcased during a workshop for school pupils.
