  • A woman was injured in a road accident on the Budaiya Highway yesterday. The incident was reported around 1pm on the highway between Shakura and Abu Saiba. According to reports, the woman lost control of the Nissan Maxima she was driving and crashed into a lamp post. She was taken to hospital in an ambulance, according to sources.   • <p>THE Bahrain Indian School honoured students who won laurels in the International Olympiad Exams conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation, India.</p><p>Ashok Shanbagh, who was placed fourth at the zonal and international levels in English Olympiad, was awarded a gold medal, a certificate of excellence and a cash prize.</p><p>Parth Gupta, who secured the seventh position at the zonal and 20th at the international level in Cyber Olympiad, was awarded a cash prize and a certificate of excellence.</p><p>Sixteen students of other grades secured merit certificates for securing high rank at the zonal level in Level II exams.</p><p>They were awarded prizes by principal Saji Jacob at a special assembly.</p><p>Directors Himanshu Verma and Ritu Verma congratulated the students, teachers and the parents.</p>

  • <p>TRADITIONAL Bahraini crafts and zari embroidery were featured at an entrepreneur’s market at the Galleria Mall, Zinj.</p><p>The two-day Eid Pop-Up bazaar also showcased trendy jewellery, food fashion, floral decor and accessories from Bahraini start-up owners.</p><p>It was jointly organised by the UN Industrial Development Organisation’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office (Unido-ITPO) and the Arab International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Investment.</p><p>Present were Unido-ITPO head Dr Hashim Hussein, Bahrain Businesswomen Society president Ahlam Janahi and Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry board member Batool Dadabai, among others.   • On the occasion of Eid, around 15 members of the Lions Club of Riffa visited the Geriatrics Hospital, Muharraq which takes care of more than 100 patients. The club presented hijabs to women and ghutra (head-dress) to men along with fruits and sweets. Present were club president Sanjay Gupta and senior member Yousuf Hubaishi, along with others.   • <p>The housing ministry started today distributing Arad Housing Project units. It follows orders from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, to distribute 5,000. The ministry will also distribute them tomorrow, the third day of Eid. Housing Minister Bassem Al Hamer hailed great progress of the Arad housing project, adding that it is part of a line-up of projects carried out nationwide as part of the ministry’s programme to build 25,000 housing units and a strategic plan to implement royal directives to build 40,000 units within the shortest time possible.</p>

  • <p><em>Members of the GPIC Ladies Working Committee during their visit to the Down Syndrome Care Centre</em></p><p>Members of the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) Ladies Working Committee visited the Down Syndrome Care Centre to share the joy of Eid with the families.</p><p>Company president Dr Abdulrahman Jawahery thanked the committee chairperson and members for the humanitarian initiative, which, he said reflected a spirit of giving and love of others.</p><p>He said they are always keen to extend a helping hand and assist all sections of society in the country.</p><p>The director of the centre Dr Abdulkarim Al Mannai expressed his thanks and appreciation to GPIC for their gesture, which made the children and their parents very happy.</p><p><em><br></em></p>

  • Students from various disability centres in Bahrain showcased their artwork at an exhibition as part of a programme conducted by the British Council and sponsored by HSBC Bank. ‘Art-Abled’ was launched in 2009 by the British Council for children with disabilities to display their capabilities and equal opportunities to contribute to the community. It consists of a series of training workshops for teachers and HSBC volunteers, followed by art workshops with the children, facilitated by specialised trainers and artists from the UK and Bahrain.
