Steve Harvey, the host of Miss Universe 2021, is facing criticism for asking Miss Universe winner Harnaaz Sandhu to do animal impressions on stage.
Harvey, addressing the 21-year-old Sandhu, said, “I hear you do some pretty good animal impersonations. Let’s hear your best one.”
“Oh my god, Steve, I was not expecting to do this on the world stage,” Sandhu replied, looking visibly shaken, before adding, “I have to do this, I have no other option.”
The video has now gone viral on social media.
Harvey asked most other contestants about their various accomplishments in social work, while Sandhu’s only question was concerning animal impressions, even though she is an advocate for women’s rights and empowerment in India, and has worked with her gynaecologist mother to spread awareness about women’s hygiene at health camps.
Many on social media called the incident ‘completely inappropriate’ and are calling for Harvey to quit his role in the Miss Universe pageant.
The annual Miss Universe beauty pageant was hosted in Eilat, Israel, on 12 December.
Harnaaz Sandhu is the third Indian woman to win the Miss Universe title, after Indian actors Lara Dutta (2000) and Sushmita Sen (1994).
