BACK pain is one of the most common problems experienced by people in present times and it remains a significant global public health concern.
It is estimated that around eight per cent of the world’s population is affected by back pain, a problem which becomes more prevalent with age.
Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH) has launched a unique Back Pain and Spine Clinic to address the need to treat back pain with a difference.
The clinic has been designed to provide a team-based approach and personalised care, whereby a patient can consult an orthopaedic spine surgeon and neurosurgeon at the same time.
An individualised treatment plan will then be devised based on the patient’s concerns, advanced imaging and accurate diagnosis.
RBH orthopaedic spine surgery consultant Dr Mohamed Ahmad explained that back and spine pain can happen due to a variety of causes, most common of which include stress, inflammation, arthritis, osteoporosis, herniated disc or pulled muscles or tendon.
“If your back pain is accompanied by sudden spike in pain, discomfort or weakness or numbness, then it is important that you get a precise diagnosis,” he added.
Neuro surgery consultant Dr Nabeel Hameed said a multi-disciplinary approach “is one of the best ways to arrive at an effective treatment plan” as in many cases, acute back pain is due to strain, muscle damage or nerve damage.
