A junior high school student in Karume, Japan, was given three days of "separate room schooling" for getting her eyebrows plucked, it has been revealed.
The 14-year-old was given an infraction for not being in compliance with the school's hair styling and hair dying rules, during an inspection conducted at the public school in April.
She was punished for apparently plucking the edge of her eyebrows to give a more groomed appearance.
As punishment, the school placed her in a separate classroom for her schoolwork, known as 'besshitu toko', she was also asked to write a reflective essay.
Miki Hata, the school's director of education, defended the decision, claiming that plucking eyebrows can distract students.
Reactions towards the school have been negative since the story broke and many have accused them of depriving students of their freedom.
A councilperson for Karume and a lawyer have also since come out against the school.
