A month-long prostate cancer awareness campaign has been launched.
The drive is organised by Health Matters, an online platform dedicated to promoting wellness in Bahrain run by Hilal Conferences and Exhibitions (HCE).
The campaign will culminate in a free-to-attend prostate cancer awareness briefing on November 29, from 11.30am to 12.45pm, at the Wyndham Grand Manama Hotel.
The session will focus on prostate cancer risk factors, symptoms, screening and debunking the stigma associated with it.
“Prostate cancer is a disease of rising significance worldwide,” said HCE managing director Jubran Abdulrahman.
“It is the second-most diagnosed malignancy and the fifth-most common cause of cancer-related mortality in men,” he added.
A study conducted last year by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain found that Bahrain has one of the highest per capita rates of prostate cancer in the Middle East.
“As much as this month is about raising awareness about prostate cancer it should also be about acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the healthcare professionals in providing the care and the support to all cancer sufferers,” added Mr Abdulrahman.
During the campaign, informative articles, videos and technical papers relating to the disease will be carried on Health Matters’ website, bahrainhealthmatters.com.
“Men and their family circles can have a knowledge gap when it comes to understanding prostate cancer,” said event director Ahmed Suleiman.
“The awareness campaign will seek to engage the taboos around prostate cancer with an understanding of the cultural sensitivities,” he added.
“The speakers will emphasise the importance of early screening and detection for treating prostate cancer.”
The prostate cancer awareness campaign is being held in partnership with the Bahrain Cancer Society and Healthcapita Bahrain with the support of Gulf Daily News and Wyndham Grand Manama.
