CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious riders Antonio Tiberi and Damiano Caruso both finished in the top 10 on the rain-hit 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia 2024 yesterday.
Tiberi recovered from a disappointing previous leg to claim an impressive fifth on the stage classification after a shortened day of road racing due to bad weather. Caruso followed not far behind in seventh.
The Italian pair completed the day’s work a little more than half-a-minute behind stage winner Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates.
Following his impressive showing yesterday, Tiberi stayed fifth on the race’s general classification for the Maglia Rosa or leader’s “pink jersey”. He is still hoping to close the gap towards the overall podium with the last several stages left in this year’s Giro. Caruso, meanwhile, climbed three places to 21st, while Edoardo Zambanini was the team’s third-best rider in 33rd.
Tiberi also continued to hold on to the Maglia Bianca or “white jersey”, worn by the race’s best young rider. His lead over INEOS Grenadiers’ Thymen Arensman, however, has withered down to 24 seconds.
The Giro d’Italia continues today with a 159km 17th stage. It will begin from Selva di Val Gardena and finish at Passo Brocon.
