ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN will be looking to defend their title this weekend in the women’s race of the World Military Half-Marathon Championship, taking place in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina.
A seven-member team will be flying the kingdom’s flag at the event, with four of the athletes set to compete in the women’s run. They will be spearheaded by Violah Jepchumba and Ruth Jebet, who were the gold and silver-medallists, respectively, on the individual classification last year in Lucerne, Switzerland. Jepchumba and Jebet also took home the women’s team title along with Tigist Gashaw and Roselidah Jepketer.
Gashaw will be racing alongside Jepchumba and Jebet once again this weekend, while Bahrain’s Bontu Rebitu will be competing in the place of Jepketer.
In the men’s event, three Bahrainis are set to run. Among them are Abraham Cheroben and Bacha Zelalem, who finished fourth and 12th on the individual classification in 2023. They will be joined by Alberto Rop, who replaces Alemu Bekele.
The Bahrainis will hope to make it onto the men’s team podium this time around. Zelalem, Cheroben and Bekele narrowly missed out on the top three after finishing fourth in last year’s race.
The Bahrain athletes departed for Sarajevo yesterday, according to the Bahrain Athletics Association. Their races will be taking place on Sunday.
The World Military Half-Marathon Championship is being held by the International Military Sports Council (CISM) for the second year in a row. It will feature elite athletes from around the world.
