BASKETBALL – Manama's senior men’s basketball team head coach Linos Gavriel has been suspended for one month from all competitions and fined $10,000 for his actions that led to his ejection from Manama’s game against Al Ahli on Monday in their best-of-three play-off for a berth in the semi-finals of the Fiba West Asia Super League’s (WASL) Gulf sub-zone.
This was revealed yesterday by official Fiba media partner BS Action on social media, and confirmed by the Bahrain Basketball Association.
Gavriel was sent to the locker room with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter after viciously protesting a call by Manama’s Ali Jaber on Ahli’s Dominique Sutton.
Gavriel dramatically rushed onto the court to confront the referee and needed to be restrained by Manama’s Clint Chapman.
Gavriel’s suspension was effective immediately.
Ahli drew first blood in the series with their 65-56 game one victory.
They are now one win away from advancing to the WASL Gulf final four, where Shabab Al Ahli of the UAE are waiting for another best-of-three series.
Manama, on the other hand, will look to take game two on Monday next week and extend their head-to-head to a winner-take-all third game, scheduled for March 3. Gavriel will miss the remaining contests.
The winners of this all-Bahraini play-off will begin their match-up against Shabab Al Ahli on March 10 with game one.
Game two will then be on March 17, and then a third game, if required, will be held on March 24.
