The Wall Street Journal said that the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump were a ‘valuable gift’ to Chinese President Xi Jinping, allowing Beijing to strengthen its international alliances amid waning world confidence in Washington’s credibility.
The newspaper noted that these policies have weakened the United States’ position as a global economic leader, while China exploited the situation to present itself as a more reliable alternative. It considered that what it described as a ‘tariff shock’ could undermine Trump’s efforts to succeed in his second presidential term, especially with the growing criticism of his trade policy.
The newspaper wrote that American voters partially entrusted him due to the strong economic performance during his first term. However, his second term has been marked by unleashing his obsession with trade and foreign policies, the negative consequences of which have started to emerge. The newspaper concluded by stating, ‘Trump will fail if he does not heed the warnings’.
