Amman - Omani rally driver Abdullah Al Rawahi claimed second place in Jordan International Rally, the fourth round of the Middle East Rally Championship, finishing behind Qatari champion Nasser Al Attiyah with a gap of approximately three minutes.
Meanwhile, his compatriot Abdullah Al Zubair dominated the MERC 2 category, securing fifth place overall in his Subaru Impreza, followed closely by teammate Zakariya Al Amiri in second place within the same category.
The rally, held under scorching conditions near the Dead Sea, featured fierce competition until the final moments, particularly between Al Rawahi and Al Attiyah. The event consisted of 12 stages, combining mountainous terrain and coastal routes, with 22 cars competing across various categories.
Al Rawahi initially led the morning stages on Friday in Tel Hilal, Al-Karama, and Al-Maghtas. However, Al Attiyah reclaimed the lead in the evening stages by a narrow margin of seconds. Meanwhile, Al Zubair and co-driver Taha Soomar maintained their dominance in the MERC 2 category despite strong challenges from Al Amiri, co-driver Mohammed Al Mazroui, and other regional competitors from Jordan and Lebanon. Al-Amiri still leads the category standings, but Al Zubair has narrowed the gap to just nine points in his pursuit of this year’s title.
