Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has emphasised the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population.
President Abbas made the call as he held a remote meeting from Ramallah with the chairman and members of the ministerial committee mandated by the Joint Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit on developments in the Gaza Strip.
The meeting was chaired by Saudi Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and attended by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani; Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Minister Ayman Safadi; Egypt’s Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Dr Badr Abdelatty; and Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
President Abbas expressed his appreciation for the committee’s ongoing international efforts to defend the rights of the Palestinian people. He also thanked the panel for acknowledging the commitment of its member states to supporting the Palestinian cause.
The Palestinian president said he looked forward to the high-level international conference on the Palestinian issue, scheduled to take place in New York this month, as an important platform for supporting the Palestinian cause and rallying international recognition of an independent Palestinian state.
He underscored the Palestinian Authority’s readiness to co-operate with Arab nations and the international community to achieve peace and stability in Gaza, and wished the committee success in its continued efforts.
A statement issued by the ministerial committee after the meeting noted that the committee had briefed President Abbas on its international diplomatic efforts to secure an immediate end to the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, lift the blockade, and address the worsening humanitarian crisis.
The committee also shared updates on ongoing preparations for the international conference on a peaceful settlement and the implementation of the two-state solution, to be jointly chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. The conference aims to establish a Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
