VOLLEYBALL – BAHRAIN’S under-18 men’s volleyball national team are in Amman, Jordan, to participate in the 17th edition of the Arab Junior Volleyball Championship.
The Bahrainis, coached by Santiago Faidutti from Argentina, begin their medal bid in the eight-team tournament tomorrow when they face off with Kuwait at 5pm, Bahrain time.
Both sides are in Group B of the competition’s preliminary round, which also features Palestine and Iraq. Group A is composed of Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, and hosts Jordan.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE were also originally slated to take part, but have withdrawn.
Following tomorrow’s fixture, the Bahrainis will next take on Iraq on Monday at 5pm, before facing Palestine on the concluding day of the group stage on Wednesday, also at 5pm. Both times are Bahrain.
The knockout stages will be played following the preliminary round.
Prior to today’s start of action, in which Bahrain have a bye, the official pre-tournament technical meeting was held with organisers and representatives from each of the participating delegations. The uniforms for each side were presented and approved during the gathering while the tournament’s administrative concerns were tackled.
The championship has been organised and is to be run by the Arab Volleyball Association, chaired by Bahrain Volleyball Association (BVA) president Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, in cooperation with the Jordan Volleyball Federation.
The nationals have been gearing up for their participation over the last several weeks, which included an overseas training camp in Cairo, Egypt. They have also played a few friendly matches upon reaching the Jordanian capital in their final lead-up to the tournament.
The kingdom’s delegation in Amman is headed by BVA vice-president Mohammed Al Thawadi.
